ROBOCOP Returns with Director NEILL BLOMKAMP (With Ties to 1987 Original)
A new Robocop film with director Neill Blompkamp is in development at MGM, according to Deadline. Titled Robocop Returns, the film is based on an unproduced sequel script to 1987's Robocop by its original writer Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner; the duo are now onboard as producers, with Justin Rhodes enlisted to rewrite the decades-old script.
"Anarchy reigns and the fate of Detroit hangs in the balance as RoboCop makes his triumphant return to fight crime and corruption," writes the Hollywood trade of the new film's plot.
"The original definitely had a massive effect on me as a kid,” said Blomkamp. “I loved it then and it remains a classic in the end of 20th Century sci-fi catalog, with real meaning under the surface. Hopefully that is something we can get closer to in making of a sequel. That is my goal here."
Neither Deadline nor MGM have specified if this will be a continuation of the 2014 Robocop film starring Joe Kinnaman in the title role.
